Elm Explosion

Elm Explosion Elm Explosion Phil Irons

This is the most unusual piece of Elm I have ever seen, it's not really a burr because there aren't the typical clusters of knots that are characteristic of Burr Elm.
It's a bit like an onion in that there are lots of layers of grain, you can look at it for hours and see so many different aspects to the piece. It was probably the scariest piece I have ever

turned and one of the biggest. It took me about two years to finish it because I thought it would explode due to all the voids and a giant split all the round the other side of it. The outside shape was easy to do but when it came to the hollowing that's where it got scary. I would work on it for a bit then leave it for a while and come back to it when I had summonded up the courage to do some more work on it. Eventually I got it finished and the results are spectacular even if I say so myself.

It has been in my personal collection for some years but I don't have the space to display it anymore so have decided it's tme for someone else to enjoy it.

It measure 430mm x 300mm.
