Turkey Oak (quercus cerris) is a relatively fast growing tree and is planted as an ornamental, ideal for windbreaks. This piece came from a very large tree, the crotch of which was about 3 metres in diameter, it has been fumed with Ferrous Sulphate which reacts with the tannins in the Oak darkening it. However because it's a chemical reaction only the surface changes colour and by carving through the natural colour of the wood is revealed again. To finish and protect the piece three coats of an eco-friendly hardwax oil have been applied which needs nothing more than dusting when necessary. The lid and corresponding threaded insert are in English Boxwood.
