TAKE THE GRIND OUT OF SHARPENING.

I learned a huge lesson in sharpening while watching a Japanese turner a few years ago. Every time he used a shear scraper to finish both inside and outside of his end grain tea bowls he would rub it on a wet stone a couple of times, he was keeping it sharp and it produced wide translucent shavings every time. What really struck me was the manner in which he moved during the sharpening process, with the tool in his right hand he rubbed the end on the stone backwards and forwards, nothing unusual in that  but his left arm moved in parallel with his right which meant that he keep the tool at the exact angle he wanted. He'd had a life time's practice enabling him to do this but for those of us without those years a jig can help replace that experience.

Whenever I demonstrate to a group of turners I ask how many of them enjoy sharpening their tools and normally in any group about 4 - 5 % of them will say they do, which leaves a very large proportion who don't. Usually those turners who enjoy sharpening tools have at some time or other been trained to sharpen tools either as part of their apprenticeships or something similar, the majority of turners that I meet have come to turning later in life and taken it up as a hobby and are at a great disadvantage to their colleagues experience of sharpening, using a jig can give them back the advantage.

Those advantages don't just include the ease of sharpening tools but also lengthen the life of tools as less metal is removed each time they are sharpened.

With some tools it's not even necessary to switch the grinder on, during the set up of each tool I always black the face of the bevel with a marker pen then by offering the tool up to the wheel I pull it around with my finger to check that the angle is correct. The black marker is removed and with it an amount of metal which on small tools such as a 6mm spindle gouge or mini tools is enough to keep the tool sharp.

Here is an e-mail that was sent to Woodcut in New Zealand;

Hello, I bought the TRU-GRIND system yesterday, I bought it because as I am getting older the control is getting worse. I have a very serious regret about it, that is why the heck didn't I buy it years ago. As soon as I got home I set it up, your plan is very easy to follow but make sure you watch the CD as well. After doing this I rather nervously began to sharpen a gouge, within a few seconds I realised how simple it was.
In no time at all I had done every chisel I own all 36 of them, I was over the moon as to how simple it was. BUT now for the acid test I mounted a 3" square by 15" long piece of wood on my lathe, all I can say is WOW, my tools cut through that wood like a hot knife through butter.
Thank you so much for a truly wonderful tool I shall thoroughly enjoy it, I have had a look at your website, as soon as the pennies allow I will be buying a few more bits.
This is a great hobby which I really enjoy, it keeps me occupied & my wife of 44 years enjoys the finished products.
Take care & thank you once again.....Alan T

Tru-Grind Sharpening System  Add to cart

Tru-GrindThis system offers woodturners a method of sharpening which is both simple to set up and easy to use.

The dual pivot design allows you to sharpen most turning tools quickly and easily, giving the same results time after time without the need to purchase add-on jigs or accessories. Whether it is a simple parting tool or an oval skew with a radiused edge (which has got to be the most difficult tool to sharpen) they are all easily sharpened with this system. It is also the only sharpening system that will sharpen scrapers with the same tool holder rather than an extra attachment.
The tool holder will accept tools up to 1 3/8" or 32mm in width when clamped in the horizontal position and skews and parting tools up to 1 1/4" or 30mm when clamped in the vertical position.

Included with the system is a 7 min CD-ROM video and printed instruction booklet on set up and use.

TBar dresser

A high quality diamond dresser that will keep your grinding wheels both flat and sharp. Your grinding wheel is just like any other tool it needs to be kept sharp and clean and not clogged with a build up of metal debris.  A well dressed wheel generates less heat and cuts more efficiently giving you a cleaner edge on your tools. The grinding wheels should be thought of as another tool that needs keeping sharp just like your turning tools.
